What an absolute rollercoaster of a story, and it’s so hard to explain how great this is without spoiling the story for others. So good in fact, that I read All Good Things from cover to cover in almost one sitting. Unfortunately I had to come up for air to feed the family!
Amanda Prowse always writes with such emotion, and she has a real knack for weaving her magic into every character. This isn’t so much one story as a whole series of tales that intertwine and merge across one another, showing us little glimpses and slices of many lives that will resonate with every reader in some way.
As in life, I liked some characters more than others, and then with the turn of a page, suddenly there’s another element to the tale, and a sudden surge of sympathy for a character that is entirely unexpected. Everyone is relatable; that’s the beauty of Amanda’s writing. We all know and have been exasperated by a Winnie, I remember feeling exactly like Daisy as a teenager, I’ve dreamed of getting away from everything like Cleo and I’ve been trapped in the fog of depression like Lisa. For the duration of the book, these people are so real to me, and I laughed and cried, and sympathised, got frustrated and angry and then laughed again. A whole myriad of feelings and emotions. And just when I thought I was getting back on an even keel, the biggest shock of all that left me reeling. Just too good.
All Good Things is a perfect lesson in not getting sucked in to feeling as if the grass is greener on the other side. We simply do not know what is going on in anyone else’s life. This story is in turn hugely emotional, warm, hopeful and uplifting, then heart breaking and powerful.
It’s beautifully written as always, and simply a fabulous read.
