Ordinary Human Failings by Megan Nolan

It’s 1990. A child on a London estate has been killed.Suspicion is directed at an immigrant Irish family, namely young Lucy. Journalist Tom is tasked with harbouring and cosying up to the family in a low grade hotel, while Lucy is in custody pending provisional investigations.

The way each protagonist found themselves in such a situation is told in flashback. It raises questions about family history, possible institutionalised attitudes to immigration and the fine line of the press in reporting a story and shaping the narrative - questions which seem relevant today.

I enjoyed the freshness of a new literary voice, no less in her gracious acknowledgments at the end.

I will definitely be looking out for her next one!
