I must confess that I have read all the previous 20 Rebus books before starting this 21st book - and have still enjoyed reading it very much. All this from a person who has rather gone off Rebus 'as a character of a man' in the last few books. He had become rather boorish in the last few books I found - but that did not make the books less enjoyable to read. (After all, we do not have to particularly like people in a book. They can still be interesting to read about if they are convincing - and Rebus is always very convincing.)

This book 'Even Dogs in the Wild' - sees Ian Rankin at his best, and a rather more likeable Rebus IMHO

One of the book's many thread, abuse in a children's home, is not my first choice of reading for light entertainment. However, Ian Rankin deals with the cover up of these numerous scandals over the years and the wall of silence that dominated this subject. He therefore shines an important light on this dark subject. In one of his first books, Rankin was unnecessarily graphic on this subject I felt, making it difficult to recommend the book/series to a young parent friend who likes to read to relax. (Well 2 young parent friends actually.) This is not the case with 'Even Dogs in the Wild'.

Recommend this book (and the whole series) for an entertaining bedtime or train journey read.
