The first part of this novel is quite slow going and seemed a bit aimless, but in a way this reflects what the narrator is going through at the start of the story. Once the theatre troupe are introduced the pace picks up and the narrator, along with the reader learn, develop and experience this troubled world. It is fascinating to read about the development of the characters, the stage production, and the obstacles; especially when the play is Hamlet, and even more so when spoken in Arabic in the Israeli/Palestine territories.
This book enables the reader to experience some of the tensions and dangers that Palestinians live daily, and this is not even Gaza. But the book is also full of hope and courage, and emphasises, both through the fearless staging of Hamlet and via the writing itself, the sheer importance and enduring relevance of art and literature as entertainment, enlightenment and experience to all of us wherever we live.
