I don’t know whether it’s because I read so many crime thrillers, but I found the killer obvious from the very first italicised chapter and I’m surprised by the number of rave reviews in relation to the ‘twists’.
The is my first book by this author and I found the coincidences, lack of procedure and far fetched ability of the killer just too improbable. The characters act in implausible ways (one self administers breathalyser tests before the alcohol has chance to absorb, another doesn’t remove (potentially) planted evidence when they find it in their property, and another has a handgun that would probably result in them losing their job) - frankly it all becomes a bit overkill and I skim read from halfway through.
My last observations is that if one of your main protagonists is a DCI you need to get the procedural elements of the book correct and this author’s knowledge fell far short.
