I came across this whilst looking for "space the final frontier" type books and was a little put off by the "full of errors" etc comments but decided to risk it on the basis that a "remastered" edition would fill the gaps.
Really pleased I did as well, the story is good, I spotted no loose ends or poor writing so clearly the author has taken on board the early criticism and worked at tidying the book up, so it is a pity the (I assume rightly so) early poor ratings on the basis of poor editing are pulling down the overall score.
The "feel" of the book is early Star Trek in style and if you are fine with this then you will enjoy the book, it has space exploration, First Contact, space style fighter escort battles, rescues, alien encounters (good and bad), a little tongue in cheek humour, the thrill of the chase and tension/excitement in the right doses so that the story does not exhaust the reader.
Book 2 will be on my reading list :-)
