I have pondered on a 2 star or a 3 star rating. Something I did not imagine I would have to worry about with a Patterson book....But lately I have noticed that even the WOMEN'S MURDER CLUB novels have become very formulaic and not so gripping. This one I found by chance on Amazon and the subject/description did intrigue me. Sadly I found the actual story to be a big letdown. Notice that only 54 % of 2249 reviews are 5 stars (as at 8 Sep 2023)!!! My problems were...the characters - not very likeable, and certainly not believable. Lamb gets most of the plot and he is arrogant with a weird unrealistic relationship with his 2 children (such smart dialogue - just made me cringe). Then the fact that like so many TV series both characters had assistants who could and did crack any computer ..in the world. No problems. So good they could have solved the case probably by chapter two.Not even the White House would be safe! Then there is the constant change of style. "Transcript of encrypted messages, and recorded conversations" Then back to normal story telling. I should say that the length of chapters remains the Patterson style (average 2 pages so you keep reading), and the final few chapters did improve to the point of generating some excitement and suspense, but after the one climax (which I honestly guessed - that's after over 60 years of crime reading), there is one more which kind of beggars belief. Sorry to write this negative review, but I truly was very disapointed, as was my wife (Just threw that in). Maybe wait 5 years for the paperback if you must read this!!
