This is the start of a new series. DI Kate Young is returning to work after a huge incident involving a terror attack on a train. She returns to work to try and solve a particularly gruesome murder but feels she is being set up to fail by the DCI. Another murder happens and its clear they have a serial killer on their hands but the motive isn't clear - but there is a link between these men - a high end gentleman's club. As Kate's investigation continues, its clear that she has got a tiger by the tail. There is potentially a whole lot more going on here. This book does come to a conclusion but not all the ends are tied up as I believe there is one more book to follow to deal with the remaining issues which are related but separate to the murders which are the focus of this book.

I enjoyed this but I wasn't gripped by it. At times I wasn't sure what was going on and am still not sure what I think about Kate as a lead character. I think its really hard in detective novels to get the balance right between hard cop and someone who is vulnerable, likeable and someone we can empathise with. At one point Kate comes into possession of a journal, linked to her investigation but she doesn't read it because she doesn't have time... given she knows its potentially linked I thought it was a bit stupid she didn't prioritise reading it... however, when she does get round to it, its sets us up nicely for whats coming inthe next book which I'll definitely read!

Overall, the idea is good, the writing is good and the plot really well considered.
