The way the main characters meet and first interact was particularly enjoyable, despite what Elle was experiencing and I couldn't not read on. The story draws you in and has layers that evoke a range of emotions, building up tension at times with lighter moments that made me smile.

Elle is a wonderful character, caring for her gran and wanting her best for her despite the challenges she faces herself, their relationship is heart-warming. It was nice to see Elle's health issues explained in a sensitive way, it made me think of things that I hadn't considered. August is very different in temperament, but still cares deeply for his family, the breakfast scene made me smile. He is a well crafted character, having the dual point of view was beneficial to understand what he was thinking as the story developed.

The supporting characters are well developed, with roles to play and their own individual character which added to the enjoyment.
